Here’s a great way to do art anywhere, loosen up, and draw what you SEE. This is a Blind Contour Drawing. Work on paper or in your sketchbook. Relax, slow down, and surprise yourself. I’m a lefty, so just reverse the sides for yourself if you’re right handed. Click on the video for the whole demo.

There are 4 Basic Beliefs we Artists must remember as we grow into our creative life. This video opens us to those 4 truths of art.

First, to find the Magic, we never stop learning. Why do we just watch artists make art without trying it ourselves? I know you have enough skill and practice to create an great contour drawing. Move past your inner critic and let go of fear. This is play, an experiment to see how well you do. Go slowly and amaze yourself.

Secondly, you were born creative. It’s a part of our DNA that makes us human. We go beyond tool making to actually drawing what we see. No other creature does that. Give yourself permission to follow your intuition and natural instincts. Being Creative is Why We’re Here!

Thirdly, only in the Doing of Art, do we guarantee our growth as an artist. We had to practice to learn to walk, to play at anything, and to function in the world. Art calls for the same practice, practice, practice. The more we do, the better we become. Doing is the Becoming of a true Artist. I guarantee it!

Finally, trying a Contour Drawing brings us back to beginner’s mind. Each completed piece of art leads to the next. Art is an endless cycle of discovery, trying something new, and learning about ourselves along the way. Growth is all about what’s next. What is the next step on a spiral path in our evolving life? We are never the same. Each piece teaches us something new to add to our creative unlimited toolbox of life. Never stop.

Thoughts about art inspiration and artist’s beliefs shift our artistic path. Do we explore and play or limit ourselves as we aim for the masterpiece? It’s estimated that Picasso created 50,000 artworks: 1,885 paintings, 12,000 drawings, 2880 ceramics, many thousands of prints, many tapestries and rugs, as well as 1228 sculptures. But we only know of the famous ones.
